How did political and economic problems in Britain contribute to unrest in the colonies?
The British were the main troops in the French Indian wars, to protect "Colonies of the Crown" Before that wars with France took there toll on the British treasure chest. This left Britain broke, they needed taxes to build up the countries treasure chest again. It was not a decision that was made right away and some in the house of commons were against taxing the American colonies for British debt and warned it may backfire. But what contributed to the unrest was taxes were levied against the colonies without any notice and no colonist had a say in it. It was not the taxes per-say that caused the unrest. It was the fact they had no say or vote in the manner, a.k.a. "taxation without representation". Now for the French Indian War Alexander Hamilton and Samuel Adams both said it was the British who protected them, so they should assume some responsibility. As for the wars with the French, there were mixed feeling about that. But the issue was not the taxes. It was the taxes were levied by a king over 3000 miles away. None of the colonies had representatives in the house of commons. So no one new or had a say in these taxes until the tax collector commith. In simple terms, it would of been nice to be consulted. That is where you get "taxation without representation". That cause major unrest in the colonies. Which was the biggest catalysts of the revolutionary war.
