dont ever give up man. freedom is awesome. government will always try to take it away from the people. a lack of freedom for the citizenry always makes government effective and strengthened. but a government that wants this to happen needs its governed to unplug like you said. tyrants don't govern for long when they people truly are against them. the people have the power in reality, but it can happen that there comes a point where much evil has come about and government will not be beat by its own people. my example is with fascist governments like the Nazis. they could have been beat had somebody stood against them early enough. but they were allowed to kill the communists, the catholics, then the Jews, etc. and were left with no internal opposition. the Nazis were beat by external military forces, but what if the world's governments all tried similar divide and conquer tactics? who would come to the rescue then? sorry i got carried away, but my point is don't ever give up even if it's hell for you. it's hell for me too. our day will come and if it doesn't, maybe we can facilitate its coming for another generation.
References :
I hope you won't only vote for one office.

We would be much better off if more people became reasonably well-informed, and voted more -- at all levels of government.

It's unwise for you to plug yourself in too much.

But unplugging completely, and being ignorant is unwise, too.

Ignoring politics won't make either politics itself, or the problems caused when its done badly, go away.

In fact, if more Americans voted, Bush probably wouldn't have been able to steal two elections.

Here's a suggestion: From all the stuff you used to plug in to, pick a few of the best sources of information and analysis.

Then check them out every couple of days.

There's no reason to see your only choices as being completely plugged in all the time, and never plugging in at all.

There's a near infinity of choices between those two extremes.
References :
Our republican form of government is long gone. (Not the republican party either) Read Article 4, section 4 US constitution. We are now a democracy. Listen to the politicians closely. They will all say, "...we have such a great democracy. For those of you that don't know the difference between a democracy and a republic, take a course on political science or do some research on the web. Democracies never last only because the people eventually figure out how to vote themselves monies out of the public treasury. Democracies eventually collapse over loose fiscal policies to be followed by a dictatorship. Where is the united states as fas as having a fiscally responsible government?
Democracy - rule by the majority, 51% rule over the 49%
Laws change drastically based on the emotions or bull that the citizens are being fed by those promising the most benefits. Laws can take away life, liberty and property.
What do you own that you don't have to pay extortion money for in order to keep what you have? House? Car?

Republic - Rule by law. The laws protect life, liberty and property of everyone equally.

Read your constitution and learn something new. Compare our current form of government with the constitution and you decide what's wrong with the picture.
History has shown that governments only change by two methods, the ballot or the bullet.
References :
Political games can make a cynic out of anyone. I've heard the same promises over and over again yet nothing ever seems to get resolved. More jobs, reduced taxes, better health care, safety from terrorists etc. etc. etc. It's all a lot of bull from the average Joe's standpoint. His life will pretty much remain a struggle no matter who wins.
I admire your admiration for our Constitution. I love it as well. It outlined an idealistic society in which every man could enjoy the freedom to flourish as an individual. Then came the politicians, the courts and the insidious "Patriot" act which takes the founding document of America and crumples it into a ball of worthless rhetoric.
Big Brother lives.
References :
Ever see a poor politician, I think not. Politicians are in the job for their benefit not those of we the people. A two party system is the problem, a fifty -fifty issue at best. Special interest groups and their money should be outlawed as corruption ensues.

Just my thoughts on an unneeded hierarchy from king Bush on down.
References :
Believe it or not, I actually understand your post. I, myself, have gone on a news-blackout hiatus.

But sadly, that is not really an answer. It's simply avoiding reality, and adults don't have the option to do that.

Try to be selective about your sensory input -- you don't have to read/listen/watch everything, you know.

But you have a responsibility to leave the world a better place than you found it.
