Why do our police need longer than……?

Why do our British police need longer (the 42 days question) than many other countries, to arrive at charging someone?

I`m puzzled.
In France it`s 72 hours
Germany 48
Italy 24 hrs
Norway 48 hrs
Spain 72 hrs.

Britain 42 DAYS!
Have we already allowed ourselves to become enmeshed in a `surveillance society` as David Davis says? What the hell is going on!?

Then again, Britain has a very low violent crime rate compared to most countries….
