With protesters in France entering a seventh day of strikes and demonstrations against draconian austerity measures, many political observers in the U.S. are now wondering how long it will be before similar scenes unfold on American streets, with even Time Magazine now conceding that the prospect of a civil war in the States “doesn’t seem that far fetched”.

To be clear, Stephen Gandel’s article entitled Will the Federal Reserve Cause a Civil War? largely dismisses the possibility that the Fed’s upcoming November 3rd meeting, during which Ben Bernanke is expected to announce a fresh round of money printing, will prompt national uproar, but it doesn’t exactly debunk the notion of longer term social dislocation as a backlash to the crumbling economy, as many are now forecasting.

As we highlighted yesterday in a piece that was later picked up by the Drudge Report, it’s only a matter of time before Americans are hit with almost identical austerity measures to those that have caused the French to set up fuel blockades, stage running battles with riot police, halt air and rail travel, and virtually shut down some areas of the country.

The question remains — how will Americans react if the Obama administration pushes ahead with its plan to seize all private 401(k) pensions, which will be swallowed up by the Social Security Administration under the banner of mandatory Guaranteed Retirement Accounts? How will Americans react to the upcoming announcement that the Federal Reserve will further eviscerate the value of the dollar by purchasing junk assets from big banks at exorbitant prices with money printed out of thin air?

Time Magazine, which as a guardian of the establishment would normally be expected to disparage the potential of mass civil disobedience, actually lends the notion some spotlight by linking to a Zero Hedge story which paraphrased economic forecaster David Rosenberg, who warns that the Fed’s plan for more quantitative easing, “positions US society one step closer to civil war if not worse.”

The article also features a quote from a Washington’s Blog piece which warns that the Fed’s policies could lead to the very destruction of the republic.

“In a very real sense, Bernanke is throwing Granny and Grandpa down the stairs — on purpose. He is literally threatening those at the lower end of the economic strata, along with all who are retired, with starvation and death, and in a just nation where the rule of law controlled instead of being abused by the kleptocrats he would be facing charges of Seditious Conspiracy, as his policies will inevitably lead to the destruction of our republic.”

Lending the notion credence, Gandel writes, “With the Tea Party gaining followers, the idea of civil war over economic issues doesn’t seem that far-fetched these days.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Even Time Magazine is now conceding that the current economic course of the nation could lead to outright civil war and revolution.

Gandel finishes the article by leaving the prospect of widespread civil unrest as an open question.

“So it seems clear what the Fed is likely to do,” he writes. “How the economy, the militias and the rest of us react is up in the air. The count down is on. T minus 15 days to Fedamageddon. See you there, hopefully.”

Outside a prison in Bangkok on Tuesday, activists placed roses on the ground at the entrance to the facility.

[Vichien Sinthuprai, Red Shirt Representative]:
“I am here to represent our brothers in the northeastern provinces, and to convey their message of concern to our 11 leaders who are detained here. We still give full support to our leaders and we are continuing our peaceful movement as we have been.”

Red-shirt activists have started gathering again after crippling demonstrations and bloody clashes with the military earlier this year.

Eleven leaders of the red shirt movement have been detained since mid-May on charges of causing civil unrest and terrorism.

Two prominent leaders are currently jailed with nine other red shirts.

Other mainstream leaders have been granted bail.

Thailand’s political crisis broadly pits the mostly urban and rural working-class red shirts against supporters of the government of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

The protesters have demanded immediate elections which Abhisit is refusing to call until peace is restored.

Thailand extended the controversial security law in Bangkok and three surrounding provinces on Tuesday. The government said the situation remained volatile months after the latest round of political violence.

It bans political gatherings of more than five people and allows media censorship and detention of suspects without charge for up to 30 days.

Ninety one people were killed and nearly two thousand wounded in clashes in central Bangkok in April and May between security forces and protesters who demanded an early election.

The movement held a rally of more than ten thousand people in Bangkok on September 19th, despite the emergency laws.

Bangkok has been plagued by minor bombings being linked to the country’s political crisis, although no one has claimed responsibility and few arrests have been made.

The government remains wary, warning that violent elements among the anti-government “red shirt” movement may attempt to instigate another round of unrest.

[Supachai Jaisamut, Government Spokesman]:
“They continue to hold activities in Bangkok where the area is unstable and for those three provinces, it’s the activists’ base. The area is a big gathering place for protesters.”

Rights groups and activists say the decree is unconstitutional and is being used by the government to push its agenda and stifle its opponents.

The resurgence of the anti-government “red shirts” is one of the biggest political risks in Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy.

The video was taken from inside several squad cars during the Sept. 5 incident.

Chief David Brown said Officers Kevin Randolph and Paul Bauer began pursuing 28-year-old Andrew Collins because he was revving his motorcycle on the sidewalk of MLK Boulevard.

There was a pursuit that ended with Collins parking his bike on Lamar Street.

The squad car hits the parked motorcycle, and then two officers begin to beat Collins with batons and their fists.

One of the most shocking aspects of the video happens before the attack. Either Randolph or Bauer can be heard planning his next move.

¿Pull up alongside him so I can beat the sh** out of him,¿ the officer says.

Brown said a police supervisor received an anonymous tip letting him know about the case. As a result 22 officer, including Randolph and Bauer, were interviewed.

Randolph has since been fired.

He and Bauer will be charged with assault, official oppression and tampering with or fabricating evidence.

Officer Henry Walter Duetsch also will be charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence because Brown said he turned the dash camera in one squad car.

Bauer and Duetsch remain on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Three other officers who made physical contact with the suspect, Officers Jeremy Francis, Robert Kamphouse and Daniel Malouf, also have been placed on restricted desk duty.

Police will continue questioning other officers that were at the scene.

¿Every citizen deserves a measure of respect. As Chief of police for the city of Dallas, I expect citizens to hold me accountable for insuring that Dallas officers treat all citizens with fairness and compassion,¿ Brown said. “No one is above the laws of this great country and I expect officers observing any of their peers violating the law or the department¿s rules to report those violations immediately.¿

Brown said he believes the incident was a big deal because of the premeditation and lack of apparent motive.

¿The public¿s trust and confidence in the Dallas Police Department cannot and will not be compromised by the misconduct of a few officers,¿ he said. ¿This won¿t be tolerated. Today my expression to you I think speaks to that intolerance.¿

The FBI is also involved to see if Collins’ civil rights were violated.

He has since been treated for bruising and clotting. The charge of resisting arrest against him has been dropped

Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert has condemned the beating. He told the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday that the behavior of officers is “absolutely unacceptable.”

Leppert promises that Chief David Brown will take “decisive action and … reinforce the integrity and the standards of the Dallas Police Department.”

My apologies to all the good police officers at the Norwalk PD, I mean no offence to you. As a minister I have to be lumped in with sexual perverts all the time and it really sucks. You guys get a bad rap from bad cops. I know you try your best and we all have bad days sometimes, just remember, an, “I’m sorry” goes a long way. I do have a question to those in charge. With such a huge gang problem in the city and all the gang slayings, Why in the world would the department send two detectives to follow and photograph some kook with a sign? Why arrest a Pastor in his church for that matter? Why not go after the big fish? Like a guy who commits Grand Larceny. Det.
