Beautification Work Resumes on Kashmir’s Dal Lake
Three months of political unrest in Indian Kashmir has had a major impact on one of the region’s most famous tourist attractions: Dal Lake. With cleanup work halted, raw sewage and other waste have polluted the water. Now, finally, cleanup has resumed.
Cleaning and beautification work resumes on Kashmir’s famous Dal Lake. Three months of curfews and strikes in the region have stalled the work.
Almost 500 canals have been cleaned so far.
[Mir Irfan, Asst. Exec. Engineer, Lake & Water Development Authority]:
“We have put all our machines, along with motorboats and manpower to work. We have started operations in double shifts.”
The Dal Lake is a major tourist attraction in the Kashmir Valley and is deeply relevant to the cultural heritage of the state’s summer capital Srinagar.
[Muneer Bhatt, Local]:
“Dal Lake is our pride. It has been the pride of Kashmir and by God’s grace it will always remain so.”
The lake’s water quality has also deteriorated due to pollution caused by untreated sewage and solid waste that is fed into the lake from nearby settlements and houseboats.
In addition, thick layers of algae and duckweed grow wild on the lake.
A nearly three-month-long spate of strikes, curfews and security lockdowns have kept the Kashmir Valley tense, shutting down much of the region.
