Credit Crunch and Recession sparks protests and riots

Economic related protests and riots are occuring around the world from Iceland to China. The mainstream media in the U.S. gives relatively little or no coverage to these events. On January 23, 2009, the Prime Minister of Iceland, Geir Haarde resigned from office following several months of protests over the banking collapse and credit squeeze. The resignation of the Minister of Business Affairs followed two days later. Economic conditions in Iceland and other parts of the world continue to deteriorate as the effects of the credit crisis affect the general economy. The world economy appears to be sliding deeper into recession and possibly something worse. Read more on the economic downturn here. Protests in Iceland are happening on a near daily basis and are becoming edgier as tensions mount amidst the declining economy. You can see more about Iceland’s economic fallout and protests at the excellent blog (written and updated frequently by a native Icelander) here http://iceland-dori.blogspot.com/

Economic related rioting is also increasing in Eastern Europe. In particular, Latvia has seen some extremely violent rioting. Rioting has also been seen in Greece, Bulgaria and Lithuania.See videos below.

There is a great deal of unrest in China, as the recession in the United States and Europe is drastically reducing demand for factory produced goods made there. In particular, the city of Guangdong, has seen large scale rioting by recently unemployed factory workers who were left desparate and destitute after factory closures. Most economists agree that China requires a minimum of 8% economic growth just to provide enough jobs to keep pace with the huge numbers of new people entering the workforce due to population growth. Recently, the growth rate dipped to 6.8% and projections indicate that it may decline to 5% which indicates severe economic problems and increased social upheaval.

Whether it’s Haiti or Darfur,as a result of natural distasters or Political Unrest, aid agencies must provide assistance as quickly as possible. In order to do that they need the support of manufacturers and logistics firms. The Kärcher Futuretech company, for example, provides clean water and mobile kitchens. Logistics firm Kühne und Nagel has specialized in transport and organization. The companies must work quickly and efficiently,as human lives hang in the balance.

Ron Paul discusses social problems surrounding the Fed and corruption in Washington.

Congressman Ron Paul, who has long warned of the coming economic collapse that hit in 2008, now warns that the crash of the dollar could result in social unrest and instability. Our option? Make the idea of freedom itself the mainstream again. Change foreign policy, correct the debt, audit the Fed, reinstitute sound money, end bailouts and croney capitalism, cut the military industrial complex down to sound, and re-balance the power relationship between the executive and Congress back to the Constitutional structure.

Iran has postponed a visit to Tehran by MEPs who were going to meet Iranian opposition activists and Majlis (parliament) members this week.

The MEPs’ visit had been planned for 7-11 January. Tehran said a new date would be set “by mutual agreement”.

The EU delegation head, a German Green politician, accused Tehran of trying to avoid a focus on Political Unrest, following a spate of clashes in Iran.

Barbara Lochbihler MEP said Tehran saw the visit as “a risk not worth taking”.

The cancellation was “another sad illustration of how much the Iranian leadership opposes any discussion of the major unresolved problems in the country,” she said.

Meetings with Iranian foreign ministry officials and business representatives had also been planned, the BBC reported.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday Iran banned its citizens from co-operating with foreign organisations it says are trying to destabilise the government, state media reported.

The 60 blacklisted groups include human rights groups, Iranian opposition websites and media groups such as the BBC and US broadcasters.

Iranian security forces have cracked down on opposition protests since June’s disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, arresting dozens of activists.
