I’m doing a paper for school, and I want to pick a topic having to do with political corruption. I’ve been researching, and honestly, I don’t really understand what each term means. Is there a difference? Would a corrupt country such as Somalia be experiencing both corruption AND tyranny?

Tyranny usually comes from corruption. The government get corrupt and then becomes a tyrannical power. Corruption is a state of being corrupt while Tyranny is a way you govern.

To boil it down to basics:

Corruption in government usually involves pocketing money from the people you are supposed to be spending to make their lives better. Example: Imagine you are the leader of a country, and the people pay taxes to the government. Instead of you spending the tax money on improving the country, like building better roads, water supply etc. you decide to keep the money for yourself and spend it on yourself however you want.

Tyranny involves one leader in command of the whole country and using that power for personal gain. For example. The United States president is not considered a tyrant because he is kept in check by the House and Senate AND the Supreme Court. Since he does not hold absolute power, he is not considered a tyrant. A tyrant has to hold absolute power where he can do whatever he wants with the government without having any opposition from any other government bodies.

Since I defined what a Tyrant and Corruption are, I think you can make up your mind about the last question. Research the country and write your essay. Make sure you provide evidence with any claims you may have.
